THE RETURN OF FENG!

Here is a good article about Feng who is one of the greatest golf athletes in China. Let see how she is these days.

One year ago, LPGA rookie Feng Shanshan embarked on a run of nine missed cuts in 10 events that suggested the Chinese teen may have graduated to the world’s premier women’s golf tour a fraction too early.

Now the 19-year-old Guangzhou native is starting her sophomore season with the aim of proving her detractors wrong by clinching her maiden victory.

“I missed 10 cuts in 11 tournaments (including the 2007 US Open), and everyone was thinking, ‘Oh she’s not doing well and she’s not going to come back.’ But I didn’t worry about it too much because I knew I still had time,” Feng added before explaining how her target has shifted from just trying to survive four rounds of play.

Now she is back with the world’s largest banking group behind her.

HSBC made an unusual announcement this week by stating that even if Feng had not qualified for the HSBC Women’s Champions in Singapore next month via her (final) position on the 2008 LPGA Money List, the bank would have saved her a spot simply out of respect.

“It’s not our usual business practice to discuss contingency plans or to make public our behind-the-scenes discussions,” explained Giles Morgan, HSBC Group’s head of sponsorship. “But we made that statement to show how much we respect what Shanshan has done for women’s golf in China and for the girl’s currently developing their game as part of the HSBC China Junior Golf Program.”

According to the National Golf Foundation, the number of new courses expected to open in the United States in 2008 is the smallest in 20 years. More courses are scheduled to close this year (nearly 100) than the 80 expected to open, though the closures have fallen since almost 150 were shut down two years ago. The golf construction boom of the 1990s – when about 2,500 new courses (mostly daily fee ones) were added to the 13,000 or so already extant in the U.S. – is not only over; it’s stuck in reverse.

Rick Jacobson is a golf course architect in Libertyville, Ill. For nearly two decades, the founder of Jacobson Golf Course Design designed and renovated courses in Chicago suburbs, such as Bloomingdale and Winnetka, as well as nationally. But in the last few years, Jacobson – who has worked with Jack Nicklaus on a number of projects – has focused on a new market: China.

Last month, Jacobson agreed to design a 27-hole course in Hong Kong. It’s his third venture in China, following the 36-hole Lion’s Lake Resort course near Guangzhou and Chaozhou, an 18-hole resort course.

Hundreds of courses have been built in China in the last quarter-century with at least 20 more expected to open in the next few years.

Profile
Situated in the rolling hills just outside of Xiancun, Guangzhou International Golf Club features 18 holes of interesting and sometimes difficult golf. The length of the course is offset by generous fairways so it is definitely a driver friendly course. The approaches to the green, however, are a different proposition. Well protected by sand and/or water, the putting surfaces here can be particularly slick. The undulations on the greens are quite severe, so to score well a reliable short game is imperative.
