China’s top 10 golf courses: Kunming is King

*

US-based Golf Digest magazine has released its annual list of what it considers to be the China’s top ten golf courses. According to the magazine’s editors, if you’re looking for China’s best courses, forget Shanghai, Beijing or Shenzhen – the best golf in China is in Kunming.

Kunming took three of the top six spots on Golf Digest’s list, here are the results:

1. Spring City Golf & Lake Resort (Lake course), Kunming, Yunnan province

2. Spring City Golf & Lake Resort (Mountain course), Kunming, Yunnan province

3. Sheshan Golf Club, Shanghai

4. Shenzhen Golf Club, Shenzhen, Guangdong province

5. Tiger Beach Golf Links, Haiyang, Shandong province

6. Lakeview Golf Club, Kunming, Yunnan province

7. Jian Lake Golf & Country Club, Shaoxing, Zhejiang province

8. Trans Strait Golf Club, Fuzhou, Fujian province

9. Pine Valley Golf Resort & Country Club (Old course), Beijing

10. Mission Hills Golf Club (Norman course), Shenzhen, Guangdong province

Kunming ended up beating out the big coastal cities with the top two courses – both at Spring City Golf and Lake Resort. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr, Spring City’s Lake course was named best in China, beating out Spring City’s other championship course, the Jack Nicklaus-designed Mountain course.

Kunming reappears at the number six spot on the list with Lakeview Golf Club, which has been the site of the Yunnan stops of the Omega China Tour as well as the Faldo Series Asia.

Shanghai’s Sheshan Golf course rounded out the top three.

Shenzhen is the only other city with multiple courses in Golf Digest’s top ten – Shenzhen Golf Club was named number four, while Mission Hills Golf Club’s Greg Norman-designed course came in tenth.

Shanghai

Shanghai Golf Tours

Shanghai is the largest city in China in terms of population and one of the largest urban areas in the world, with over 20 million people in its extended metropolitan area. Located on China’s central eastern coast near the mouth of the Yangtze River, the city is administered as a municipality with province-level status.

Originally a fishing and textiles town, Shanghai grew to importance in the 19th century due to its favourable port location and as one of the cities opened to foreign trade by the 1842 Treaty of Nanking. The city flourished as a center of commerce between east and west, and became a multinational hub of finance and business by the 1930s. However, Shanghai’s prosperity ended after the 1949 Communist takeover and the subsequent cessation of foreign investment. Economic reforms in 1990 have resulted in intense development and financing, and in 2005 Shanghai became the world’s busiest cargo port.

The city is an emerging tourist destination renowned for its historical landmarks such as the Bund and Xintiandi, its modern and ever-expanding Pudong skyline including the Oriental Pearl Tower, and its new reputation as a center of culture and design.Today, Shanghai is mainland China’s center for commerce and finance, and has been described as the “showpiece” of the world’s fastest-growing economy.

Beijing Golf Tours

Beijing is a metropolis in northern China and the capital of the People’s Republic of China. It is one of the four municipalities of the PRC, which are equivalent to provinces in China’s administrative structure. Beijing is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. The municipality of Beijing borders Hebei Province to the north, west, south, and for a small section in the east, and Tianjin Municipality to the southeast.

Beijing is China’s second largest city, after Shanghai.Beijing is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and motorways passing through the city. It is also the focal point of many international flights to China. Beijing is recognised as the political, educational, and cultural center of the People’s Republic of China, while Shanghai and Hong Kong predominate in economic fields. The city hosted the 2008 Olympic Games.

Few cities in the world besides Beijing have served as the political and cultural centre of an area as immense as China for so long. The Encyclopedia Britannica describes it as, “One of the world’s great cities,” and declares, “The city has been an integral part of China’s history over the past eight centuries, and nearly every major building of any age in Beijing has at least some national historical significance.” Beijing is renowned for its opulent palaces, temples, and huge stone walls and gates. Its art treasures and universities have long made the city a centre of culture and art in China.

Fujian Province

fujian golf tours

Fujian province is located on the southeast coast of China. Taiwan is a nearby neighbor to the east, and the administration of this remarkable province is split between the People’s Republic of China, which presides over the mainland portion, and Taiwan, which has jurisdiction over the island archipelagos of Matsu and Quemoy.

This mountainous province boasts warm winters and a subtropical climate. Typhoons occur in this area, along with high summer temperatures that lend to the warm water which helps produce their summer weather. Because of the mountainous terrain, Fujian was fairly isolated for a long time because of the difficulty of building railways and paved roads prior to 1950. This delay in developing the region has aided in the preservation of Fujian’s environment and related ecosystems, because they have managed to retain much of their forests and the animals that live in them, unlike other parts of China. One famous example of Southeast China’s protection of biodiversity is found in Fujian, in the Wuyi Mountains, which offers many types of forests, including rainforests. If you get the opportunity to visit Fujian province, you will not want to miss Wuyi Palace, dating back to the seventh century and located on this beautiful mountain.

The small area in Fujian that is devoted to farming produces rice, sweet potatoes and wheat, as well as sugar cane and rapeseed. Longan fruit, along with lychee and tea, are also commodities that you will find in this lovely region of China. With coastal access, Fujian is a seafood and shellfish provider. Not surprisingly, seafood plays a large role in Fujian cuisine. Some famous regional dishes focus on the use of oysters and fish, including oyster omelets and fish balls. A delight for the eye as well as the palate, the cuisine of the Fujian province can be broken down into four varieties. Foods classified under Fuzhou-style tend to focus on sweet and sour soups. Culinary treats from the Western region are spicy and either steamed or stir-fried. Food from the southern part of this glorious province features spicy and sweet sauces, and the strongest flavored food in the province is the focus of Quanzhou cuisine. When you visit Fujian province, be sure to try the popular dish known as “Buddha jumps over the wall,” which plays up several of the delicious native foods of the region, including Shaoxing wine, sea cucumber, abalone, and shark fin.

A relatively wealthy province when compared to others in China, Fujian also boasts many cultural treasures as well. Several beautiful temples are to be found in Fujian, including the Buddhist Guanghua Temple, built in 558. The province also is home to Gulangyu Island, which provided residences for Westerners who lived in the province during colonial times. This island is home to China’s piano museum, and is sometimes referred to as “Piano Island.” Visitors may take a vibrant ferry boat from Xiamen Island, but they are not allowed to bring cars to Gulangyu. Instead, they rely on public transport or walking to traverse this breathtaking travel destination.

Guangdong Province

Guangdong Province golf tours

Temple of the Six Banyan Trees golf tours

The Chinese province of Guangdong is located in the southernmost part of the country. With its location on the South China Sea(南中國海), it is a natural entry point to South China. It is bordered by Jiangxi (江西) and Hunan (湖南) provinces to the north, Fujian (福建) province to the east, and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region (广西壮族自治区) to the west. Guangdong province also claims 651 islands, many of which are located in the Pearl River Delta (珠江三角洲). Many of the rivers in the area feed into this delta and flow out into the South China Sea.

The provincial capital, Guangzhou (广州), was known in the West as Canton. The word “guang” (广) means “expanse,” and “Guangdong” refers to “expanse east.” Guangond, together with Guangxi, are known as the “dual guangs” (两广). While Guangdong province got its name during the Ming Dynasty (明朝), the area had been a coastal trade area long before then. When the West began trading with China (via Portugese, Dutch, and British traders), Guangzhou and Guangdong province was a center of trade and the comprador (买办) system. The Opium Wars, begun as a result of the opium trade, flourished at Guangzhou and resulted in the loss of Hong Kong to British control. Guangzhou today retains its status as an important center for China’s international business and trade, and many of its famous businesses and areas, like the White Swan Hotel (白天鹅宾馆) and Shamian Island (沙面岛), highlight this internationalism.

Many Chinese immigrants who came to the United States and Canada in the 1800s left China from Guangdong province. While the majority of people who live in Guangdong are ethnically Han (汉), the largest single ethnic group worldwide, Guangdong does have a diverse multi-cultural makeup, with people from forty-two different ethnic groups all living in the province. Many Chinese dialects are spoken, though most people speak Mandarin or Cantonese.

Guangdong features a subtropical climate of high humidity and hot weather in the summer, so it is best to visit during the spring and fall months. Due to its geography and weather, Guangdong produces most of the area’s rice, tea and tropical crops. Less than a quarter of all the land in Guangdong is used to produce food, so the areas that are set aside for agricultural purposes are farmed intensively.

Light industry has brought an economic boom to Guangdong that has given the province the highest GDP of any province (over 12% of China’s total GDP, and reported by some sources as high as 33% percent of China’s GDP). Guangdong is also responsible for a total third of all the imports and exports occurring in China. Food processing, including sugar refining, as well as textile manufacturing and weaving, are all major industries here. Heavy industrial pursuits include shipbuilding and repair and machine manufacturing, among others.

Guangdong is famous for its Cantonese cuisine, and many of the foods that Americans and Canadians have come to think of as Chinese food—dim sum, fried rice, lo mein noodles, chop suey, bok choi, and wontons, for example—are based on foods and dishes that originated in Guangdong. Because Guangzhou was a major trading port, international visitors through the years have introduced a wide variety of foods to the city, adding to the diversity within the cuisine. The freshest ingredients, mildly spiced, are favored, and the flavors are brought to their greatest impact with steaming, stir- and deep frying. Seafood is also often featured.

Visitors to Guangdong province can enjoy the scenic beauty of the Danxia(丹霞山), Luofu(羅浮山), and Dinghu(鼎湖山) mountains. Traveling to Guangzhou allows for scenic visits to Yuexiu Park (越秀公园), as well as the ancient Buddhist Temple of the Six Banyan Trees (刘榕寺). Many other beautiful temples are in Guangdong, including the Nanhua Temple (南华寺) located in Shaoguan(韶关). And for history and culture, the Guangdong Provincial Museum in Guangzhou offers examples of Chaozhou(潮州) wood carving, ceramic figures, old Chinese pottery and traditional Chinese calligraphy posters. A trip here means you can enjoy the best of Guangdong culture, ancient and modern.
